A large and enthusiastic crowd gathered in Letterfrack on Sunday for the official launch of Connemara West’s new 5-Year Strategic Plan, a roadmap that outlines the organisation’s vision for community-led development in northwest Connemara.
The strategy was formally launched by Cathaoirleach of Galway County Council, Cllr. Martina Kinane, who praised Connemara West as “living proof of rural resilience”. The event brought together public representatives, community members, shareholders, and key stakeholders to celebrate the next chapter in Connemara West’s long-standing legacy of innovation and local development.
Now in its 54th year, Connemara West is a cornerstone of growth in this remote region, driving progress in areas such as education, enterprise, social housing, childcare, sports facilities and cultural tourism. The new strategy builds on these foundations, placing a renewed focus on sustainable development, inclusive housing solutions, educational excellence, and the expansion of employment and tourism opportunities across the region.
Speaking at the event, Connemara West Chairman Dr. Kevin Heanue highlighted the importance of community engagement in shaping the strategy:
“This Strategic Plan is based on clear feedback from the local community, shareholders and stakeholders about the direction Connemara West should follow for the next five years. It provides a clear mandate to take action, based on community development principles, to build a sustainable and inclusive future for our community”
Cllr. Kinane echoed this sentiment, stating: “Connemara West is a national example of what can be achieved”
Following the formal launch, attendees were invited to tour the Connemara West Centre, home to a diverse range of local and regional assets including Connemara Community Radio, Conservation|Letterfrack, Youthreach, the ATU Connemara campus, and Tír na nÓg Community Crèche. These facilities showcase the organisation’s commitment to collaboration, lifelong learning, and providing critical services in the region.
The day’s formalities concluded with a vibrant Family Fun Day on the village green, where locals and visitors enjoyed bouncy castles, sack races, face painting, penalty shoot-out and a host of other family-friendly activities. The event served as a joyful reminder of the strong community bonds that define the area and the sense of shared purpose that underpins Connemara West’s mission.
