Going through the Connemara West archives has brought up a few surprises and in the coming weeks we may have to share a few gems that we found that are not directly related to Connemara West! However, for this week’s blog we have chosen the few images we have Tullycross before Renvyle Thatched Cottages were built and some of the cottages under construction. Due to the large support in the local community for Connemara West through the first shareholding drive the decision was taken by the directors, against the advice of Rent an Irish Cottage and Bord Failte, to build the cottages by direct local labour and not to employ an outside building contractor. It was said at the time that a local group like Connemara West would not be able to build the cottages to budget, to standard and on time and despite the dire warnings Renvyle Thatched Cottages were built to standard, on time and to the budget and employed local people thereby putting some of the early investment back into the community.
